Gio’s still panicked expression reflected in a subway car’s window as the train entered a tunnel out of Manhattan.

In another car, the passengers stood and sat huddled away from the toilet-smelling specimen seated many empty seats away, his sickly head and hands only partially obscured from their alarmed stares.

Gio tiptoed out of the subway car and onto the platform, looked down the length of cars, and immediately went to the exit. He walked home checking back at each corner for Owen. He failed to look across the street.

At his modest single family, he nervously fidgeted with his keys, finally opened the locks, and as he closed the door, a hand from outside grabbed the edge.

“Victoria! Victoria! You home?” he screamed, moving from the door. As he saw Owen enter and close it, he ran, knocking over a floor lamp on his way to the basement.

Owen, moving almost normally but looking as if rescued starving and frostbitten from a lost polar expedition, pulled on the cellar door until Gio let go, and then followed him down the stairs.

“Please let me go. Please,” Gio said, going to the basement. “Please… I didn’t see anything if that’s what you’re afraid of. I don’t know anything. Nothing. Please.… Please.”

“Gio? Gio, where are you?” someone upstairs called.

“Down here Bruno! Down the basement, Bruno. Bruno!”

Bruno the interested neighbor, stopped at the head of the stairs. “Heard you scream. You okay, buddy?”

“Yeah. No. Yeah come down, Bruno.”

Bruno went to where Gio called, passing Owen standing at the base of the stairs. “Who’s that?” he asked Gio.

“He, ah, he—oh man, you just wouldn’t believe. He. Oh man, Bruno.”

“Calm down, buddy. This guy givin’ you trouble?” Bruno said, giving the beat-up intruder a challenging look.

“No. I mean. I don’t know. You just. You just wouldn’t believe.…”

As Owen walked toward Gio, his imposing anatomy not yet returned, Bruno moved laterally to his rear.

“I just want to know,” Owen said to Gio, “how good is your memory?”

“Memory? Oh, no good, no good at all. I forget everything. Everything, don’t I Bruno?”

“What the hell’s he want, Gio?”

“You wouldn’t, wouldn’t believe it Bruno. Oh—Bruno what I saw. He’s a kill-Bru-now!”

Bruno swung a cement shovel that Owen’s hand quickly reacted to, grabbed the handle, and pulled from him. Bruno stiffened, and when Owen tossed the shovel back to him, the blade unintentionally cut into Bruno’s ribcage, and the scare tripped him back to collide against a pile of cardboard boxes.

“Oh my God,” Gio trembled, trying to run to the stairs Owen blocked.

“Ohhhh…,” Bruno cried on the concrete, blood staining his T-shirt. “I’m bleeding. I need an ambulance.”

“Press on the cut,” Owen said.

“Ahhh!” Bruno screamed. “My rib’s broke. I need a doctor.”

Owen pointed Gio move back to where he was.

“Okay. Okay. Stay calm. I’m movin’,” Gio responded.

Not sure what to do, Owen took a deep breath, and a smell he had already noticed became more apparent. He saw something on the floor, or rather in it.

“Oh—God. Oh—God,” Gio blubbered.

Owen bent near Bruno on the floor to where Bruno knocked the cardboard boxes away.
